Exploring personal boundaries

Knowing where to draw the line in emotional, private and professional settings is crucial for anybody, and especially for people who devote time to caring for others.

An experiential exploration

In this activity, you will facilitate an experience of boundaries.   You will need some string, wool, ribbon or something similar to represent a boundary. Follow the steps and enjoy this experience.

Step 1 – Creating a boundary

  • Using the string, wool or ribbon, create a boundary around you that feels comfortable for you.
  • Take a moment now to just be in that space, with the boundary you have created around you.
  • Notice the feelings and sensations in your body, notice any thoughts.

Step 2 – Moving the boundary

  • Now move that boundary (or ask someone else to move the boundary) out much further.
  • Take a moment to be in this new space with the boundary further out from its original position.
  • Notice the feelings and sensations in your body, notice any thoughts.

Step 3 – Moving the boundary again

  • Now move that boundary (or ask someone else to move the boundary) in so it is very close, almost touching you.
  • Take a moment to be in this new space with the boundary closer now from its original position.
  • Notice the feelings and sensations in your body, notice any thoughts.

Boundaries experience

In this activity, you have physically experienced the feelings and sensations of a boundary that you have determined naturally.  In addition, you have experienced and noticed the feelings, sensations and thoughts that might be similar or different when moving your boundary further out or in towards you.
