Understanding Polyvagal Theory by Dr S. Porges, and considering nervous system as a ‘system’ that incorporates mechanisms for perception, the vagus system and neuroception is a game changer for how we consider and support behaviour.

Variation in neuroception
I recall a young person was entering a room, the same room the young person had entered many times. The light was a little different. Although the room was safe and the young person had been in the room before, the young person’s neuroception triggered a physiological response, the young person was shaking, moving away from the room, upset.
An example of neuroception variation which can occur in a vulnerable nervous system.
